Mélanie Demers created Icône Pop for herself in Italy in the summer of 2016, and – true to its name – it has since taken on a life of its own. Like something from another world, the work is amenable to being created and recreated according to the performance context. Icône Pop seeks out untapped locations in which the profane and sacred may come together.

For this unique occasion, the work is being performed in a museum setting. More specifically, Icône Pop meets We Are Not directly in the exhibition Adam Pendleton: These Things We’ve Done Together. One painting a picture of what we are, the other portraying who she is.

Blending in with Pendleton’s aesthetic, Icône Pop sheds its eye-popping colours in order to peel back the all-covering veil and scale these heights and depths.

On stage, singer-composer Mykalle Bielinski intones the music of Dvorák and adds to it her own vocal poetry. Choreographer and performer Mélanie Demers embodies the combined spirits of the Virgin Mary and Beyoncé. Absolute woman. Divine and disposable.

Between arrogant freedom and sordid need for validation, the piece depicts a damaged feminine identity and Black identity, with all their attendant clichés.
