 | | | | Montreal, September 7, 2022 – Following its
runs in Montreal, Rotterdam, Munich and Paris, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime is pursuing its international tour.
This major retrospective of the work of the creator Thierry Mugler, who passed
away earlier this year, will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum from November 18,
2022, until May 7, 2023. It is the first presentation on American soil for
the exhibition that has already been seen by over one million people.
Visionary couturier, director, photographer and perfumer,
Thierry Mugler revolutionized fashion with his sculptural creations that are
both futuristic and elegant. Unfolding in a series of themes, the exhibition features some 130 haute couture
and prêt-à-porter garments – most of which have been restored – in addition to
numerous accessories, videos and unpublished sketches. It also brings together prints
by the biggest names in fashion photography, including Dominique Issermann, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and Paolo
Roversi, as well as a selection of photographs made by Mugler himself. Finally,
Couturissime features stage costumes Mugler created for Cirque du
Soleil's Zumanity, as well as a
gallery dedicated to the artist's fragrance creations, including the iconic
perfume Angel, which is celebrating
its 30th anniversary.
Produced by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2019, the
exhibition has been adapted for its Brooklyn presentation by Montreal curator
Thierry-Maxime Loriot. This iteration
will shine the spotlight on some Canadian
talent in the form of a digital projection by Michel Lemieux (Lemieux Pilon 4D Art), as
well as an immersive installation by Montreal studio Rodeo
FX, which has produced special effects for international film and
television productions, such as Game
of Thrones and Stranger
Things.
"The constantly evolving work of Mugler, with its inventions and
avant-garde architectural silhouettes, defined an era," says Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of the
exhibition. "His singular style earned a place in the history of fashion and
continues to exert a powerful influence on today's generation of couturiers –
not only because of its designs, but also because of the strong message of
inclusivity, diversity and empowerment it embodies. To present the exhibition I
created with him, in the city he lived in and loved so much, is the most
beautiful tribute I can give to celebrate the man and his legacy as an artist."

the power of women with whimsy left a permanent imprint on our collective
imagination and the history of fashion. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is

Montreal in 2019, is now being presented to the Brooklyn Museum's audience,
thus perpetuating the memory of this outstanding creator," adds Stéphane Aquin, Director of the MMFA.
